AWID, Big data, Gender and development, Brazil + | As part of AWID Forum in Brazil this was developed in partnership with ARROW (an SRHR and gender rights policy advocacy organization working in Asia-Pacific). A panel discussion which presented different perspectives on thinking through how big data shapes knowledge, and suggests prediction, in constructing and addressing 'development'. Maya presented an overview of the topic and area, gave examples from UN adoption of big data technologies. Mangala spoke frm the perspective of implementing organisations like Arrow, and Yiping spoke from the perspective of projects in China and how to think about the role of government, and what accountability means in the context of big data. + |
AWID, Coming Back to Tech, Brazil + | Tactical Tech is launching a new research project that focused on what happens to women after they have been harassed online, how their relationship with technology changes, and what it means to "go offline", particularly for activists whom rely on social media and the internet to conduct their work. As part of the AWID Forum in Brazil, Tactical Tech conducted the session entitled "Coming Back to Tech" aimed at presenting the new research concept and at receiving feedback from participants. Participants were divided into breakout groups, with each group using case studies the Tactical Tech team provided to discuss different elements related to coming back to tech. One key observation from the feedback showed that there was a tendency by the participants to focus on how to respond to online harassment as it occurs, instead of how to continue to be effective online after facing harassment. + |

Campaign Zero Trollerance, Internet + | This campaign was inspired by debates and exchanges regarding gender based online violence and trolling that took place during the GTI and were informed by participants experiences. This initiative was designed by a facilitator of the institute in partnership with the Peng collective which is a Berlin based communication group. The initiative was widely supported and relayed by many participants to the GTI. As explained in their website in a humoristic manner: “Hate has always been a part of the Internet and the intentional harassment of other people (termed trolling) has too. But the gendered forms of harassment and violence on Twitter today point to a deeper problem in society that cannot be solved by technical solutions alone. Trolls need serious, practical help to overcome their sexism, deal with their anger issues and change their behavior”. + |

Coming Back to Tech, IFF, Spain + | Online harassment and threats against women activists, rights defenders and journalists has become a prevelant issue in recent years. For many of these groups and individuals, using the internet and social media for work must all too frequently be balanced against harassment, threats and surviellance by both state and non-state actors. There are a growing number of resources to prevent different kinds of online harassment faced by women working as activists, human rights defenders or journalists. But what happens during or ‘the day after’ an attack? And then what happens after the more urgent crisis phase(s) of a campaign of harassment passes? There is little documententation and few resources that tackle these issues. As a result, we are proposing to facilitate a workshop that brings in the input of the community of activists, journalists and digital security trainers to help develop guides on tackling harassment such as account hijacking, doxing or revenge porn. The work conducted during workshop will help develop guides and manuals that can be used by activists, women rights defenders, journalists and Rapid Responders to deal with harassment and threats as they happen. + |
Conference Global Tech Women Voices, Internet + | One in every four women will experience domestic violence at the hands of a partner in their lifetime. Women aged 15–44, across all cultures, are more at risk of rape and other acts of violence, than cancer, malaria, motor accidents, or acts of war, according to the World Bank. The root cause of violence against women (VAW) is gender inequality, leading to unequal power relationships. The Womanity Foundation’s Award for the Prevention of Violence Against Women was developed in 2013 and supports collaboration between organisations seeking to prevent gender-based violence, and aims to break down barriers that such organisations face. The Award helps an Innovation Partner that has developed an already successful approach to prevent VAW to increase their reach; whilst their designated Scale-Up Partner is receiving support to adapt and deliver that project in their own location. The partnership lasts for three years. In May 2016, the Womanity Award will be given to two partners who harness ICT to prevent violence against women. These technologies might include phone apps, video games, urban mapping, internet security training, internet TV, feminist servers, and e-learning platforms, among others. Simultaneously, The Womanity Foundation is launching the ICT for Womanity collaborative network, a peer-to-peer group that connects existing “Tech for Gender” projects, that use these technologies to tackle VAW. This network will foster partnership and learning opportunities. Through this virtual session, we hope to introduce some of the innovations in the field, encourage practitioners to join the movement. Together we are activating a collaborative group that will act a safe space to exchange information and knowledge. Our hope is for this network to collect, analyse and share data to assess the effectiveness of ICT solutions that address women’s safety. + |

Criptofiesta: ¡aprende a cifrar tus correos! + |

Digital security for Women, Bosnia + | Cyberbullying and online harassment are used massively worldwide to control, manipulate, build up fear and ultimately remove girls and women and non-conforming transgender individuals from online spaces, whether we talk about gaming world or political campaigns run by female politician, the rules of unbalanced power relations between men and women in the offline world, remain and amplify in the virtual one. Sadly, but not surprisingly, Bosnia and Herzegovina is keeping up with this „trend“ too. Institutional reaction in terms of protection are slow and almost not existent. This year we intend to integrate the learning of the tools with the thinking and planning of coordinated response to attacks. Starting from this year experience of the attacks on #takebackthetech, and of similar attack against Balkan activists and groups we intend to go one step further and while continuing to provide capacity to individuals start the conversation of new practices of concerted online solidarity and response groups, envisioning a solidarity network that can support the victim during the attack and generate reverse positive content. One of the most efficient and successful activities that we have been conducting for past 5 years are digital security trainings for girls, women leaders and women's rights organisations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Trainings on privacy and security online are a big eye-opener for girls and women and lead to actual changes in the way they think about their own security and how they should use technology and Internet accordingly in their daily lives, professionally and personally. + |
Digital security for the Association of Media Women, Kenya + | When the femh3ck flash training in Nairobi came to an end, one of the participants who was from AMWIK approached Mary Kiio of Roshani Consultancy Services and requested if the company would consider training their members as the issues highlighted were very pertinent to what women go through in the country. The potential of media being more informed on cyber threats especially women would hopefully translate to various media platforms being utilized to reach more women across the country A few days later an email from the secretariat of AMWIK inquiring on if we could share on the outcomes of the femh3ck training and a request on if we can engage in other similar activities and/or platforms, lead to the discussion of holding a three day training for its members over the month of August on Saturdays for three consecutive weekends. Though both companies did not have any funding for the training , there was an agreement that Roshani Consultancy Services would avail facilitators who would be willing to share information with no pay.AMWIK on the other hand committed to identify participants who are willing to attend training with the aim of being the future trainers. AMWIK also provided office space, Internet connection, workshop materials and snacks. It was the willing participants who shared their training needs via a pre training questionnaire that resonated with the theme of the training that provided the highest motivation of the training. + |
