  Deconstruir el ser digital, nuestro ser en la red El 2016, para muchas personas en diferentes latitudes fue un año muy fuerte emocionalmente y psicológicamente. Muy cerca de Quito, en el mes de junio durante 5 días 58 mujeres y personas trans, vivimos un espacio de transformación, técnica y sensible; entre el entrenamiento, la colaboración y discusión en temas relacionados con el ejercicio de la libertad de expresión y el derecho a la privacidad y la seguridad en Internet. Tener un espacio feminista para la transferencia de conocimientos tecnológicos, más allá de responder a la dificultad de los compañeros para transferir este tipo de conocimientos a nosotras, es una acción cargada de potencias porque aprendemos mejor entre nosotras, porque nos enseñamos más fácil, porque le perdemos el miedo, porque eliminamos el misterio y reconocemos que la red al igual que muchos otros espacios de la vida no son un dominio exclusivo de los hombres (varones blancos). Vivir y pensar la tecnología desde las luchas de genero, tiene la potencia de pensamiento que tiene el pensar desde la “marginalidad”, desde los sin voz, desde los que siempre hemos estado detrás.

  El 18 de febrero recibí un correo inesperado. Estaba invitada a participar del Internet Freedom Festival. En dos semanas haría un viaje de doce horas con dos escalas desde el ombligo de America Central hasta las costas mediterráneas de España. Una de esas experiencias que sabes que causarán un gran impacto en tu vida; pero no tenés idea de cómo o hasta que medida. Valencia, a pesar el frío intenso por las tormentas de nieve que azotaron España en esos días, me recibió con los brazos abiertos. -.- Las Naves es un espacio impresionante, en el que sorprendentemente, convivimos casi 200 personas en siete días. ¿El secreto? Una programación de actividades y sesiones simultaneas ordenada en “tracks”, lo que permitía que cada quien armara su propio programa en dependencia de sus intereses. Desde que supe que iba a asistir revisé la página web del festival, dónde estaba publicado el programa, y ya llevaba marcadas las sesiones a las que quería asistir. Pienso que la planificación del evento fue ejemplar y que es en gran parte gracias al trabajo del equipo de voluntarios; quienes estuvieron dándonos acompañamiento y facilitando lo que se necesitaba. De manera general algo que podría mejorar es la titulación y descripción de las sesiones. Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a un par de sesiones que en su titulación eran una cosa y luego, por cuestiones de tiempo, terminaban siendo espacios completamente diferentes a lo anunciado. -.- Se podría pensar que esta clase de eventos, en los que se discuten casos reales de control de las comunicaciones, limitaciones a las libertades ciudadanas y violencia; el ambiente debe ser bastante lúgubre. Pero en realidad lo que pasa es que se construyen lazos de solidaridad y apoyo; se establecen bases comunes para desarrollar estrategias y enfrentar lo que se viene. 1ero de marzo. Primer día. Actividad de apertura. ¡Empezamos hablando español! Claro, también inglés. Y luego se hizo una ronda para saludarnos en todos los idiomas posibles: ruso, catalán, francés, etc, etc. Fue una tónica que se mantuvo durante toda la actividad: reconocer la diversidad de participantes, en sus contextos y sus idiomas.

  Escribo estas líneas a unos días de haber regresado del IFF, profundamente conmovida por lo que pueden ser estos encuentros en los que la tecnología es, en efecto, una construcción humana, y somos nosotros, seres humanos de todas partes del mundo los que debemos decidir sobre su rumbo, sobre todo en la medida que es una tecnología que nos convoca a todos en sus consecuencias positivas y negativas. Para mi el IFF es un espacio complejo por la multidimensionalidad en la que se opera, así que en estas líneas sólo podre narrar una pequeña parte de todo lo que se vive, y espero con el tiempo sean las acciones concretas lo que define lo valioso de haber participado en el IFF. INTERNEWS, LEVEL-UP y LOCALIZATION LAB Llegamos algunas compañeras de AL al IFF en mucho gracias al soporte de INTERNEWS.org y específicamente por el proyecto level-up.cc y con localizationlab.org y el proyecto GTI de Tacticaltech. Unas semanas antes de recibir la invitación fue que, preparando un taller de seguridad digital, visité por primera vez el sitio level-up.cc; en ese momento no pude adentrarme en todo el contenido pero las secciones que vi me fueron útiles y me gustaron mucho, pero no imaginé en ese momento que unos días después podría conocer más del proyecto. El día que participamos para entender el proceso de trabajo colectivo fue muy interesante. La metodología consistía en conocer una serie de proyectos que se están traduciendo en este momento, y después ver la plataforma en la cual se hacen, las posibilidades usando git y editores como Transifex. Era importante que conocer el proyecto no se reducía a ver las páginas o las aplicaciones sino en muchos casos poder entrar en asuntos más técnicos. En el caso de level-up creo que su contenido es concebido no como un asunto meramente de pasos a seguir sino de los procesos que generan entonces no se busca traducción literal sino sentido. En un ejercicio que se fue muy rápido en tiempo pudimos probar las herramientas de trabajo colaborativo a distancia y los intercambios de ideas fluyeron fácilmente entre nosotrxs. Habían además del grupo de Latino América personas de muchas partes del mundo en este espíritu de cooperación, de construcción colectiva que es la base de la generación de los comunes.

  Estamos a unas horas de cambiar uno de esos ciclos impuestos que se llama año gregoriano, ahora estoy con una impaciencia casi frenética para escribir éstas líneas que han tardado tanto en nacer y que obedecían a un bloqueo emocional de supervivencia, pero esta noche la neblina se despejó un poco y siento una energía sobre el futuro. Dos películas, Rogue One y Zero Day, por qué? es simple: las bases de datos con planos de estrellas de la muerte y las ciberguerras. Hace un año escribí un ensayo sobre las bombas de hidrógeno, ahora podemos tener la seguridad que la experimentación sobre bombas y microbombas con un poder de destrucción mayor y supuestamente más focalizado, las armas biológicas, pero también la explotación del ser humano y de la naturaleza y el hambre, están más presentes que nunca. Tenemos el mundo hecho una mierda, somos una pequeña especie con genes casi suicidas, y si no estamos cerca de la extinción si estamos a punto de presenciar formas cruentas a una escala masiva para que ese 1% siga teniendo el control.Y así que queda? entonces sueño...

  I arrived in Valencia without really knowing what to expect, but really eager to acquire new skills in the field of digital security training and to exchange experiences and insights with others. My hope was to improve my ability in having an impact on the communities I interact with as an activist, as well as to learn as much as possible with a view to using the acquired skills within more professional settings. I have the feeling that not only my expectations have been fulfilled, but that I could actively contribute to the process with my personal expertise and that I have been inspired to experiment with digital security trainings and with tools and notions that I have learnt more about, or that I have got to know for the first time, at the Trainers Summit. Besides, I feel honoured to have had the opportunity of meeting so many amazing trainers and of learning from and exchanging opinions with them. With the public day in the beginning and the ice-breaking in the morning of the second day, the Summit started slowly but in a relaxed atmosphere that made it possible to create a comfortable safe space and to get to know many participants from the beginning. After the slow start, however, from the afternoon of the second day onwards our activities became more and more compelling. As we began focusing on target groups, I gradually started to understand that what I thought were “first-world problems” regarding the difficulties in spreading a deep awareness on the issues of privacy and surveillance and dangerous behaviours in the usage of online services and digital tools, were actually shared by people from the most diverse countries – from Jordan to Argentina, from Colombia to Belarus. We were asked to imagine a target group and their potential request of help, and at this stage, sharing our personal experiences in order to conceive of a model group and their initial request was a spontaneous and smooth process that took place in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

  I must start by saying that Valencia is a beautiful city, awesome weather and friendly people. It was a nice location to host the CT Festival. The DST summit comprised of variety of people across the globe and if am to go by the statistics we were 80 DS trainers from 43 different countries. How awesome is that? So this is an automatic plus. Las Naves was an awesome venue thanks to the sunlight patches that we had and Ali was an excellent facilitator, I never dozed off not even a blink during the sessions. That’s how amazing I found him to be. One of my major likes was the speed geeking session. Getting to hear about all the awesome works being done across the globe by different people was just amazing. All the speed geeks were great but I liked the cyber arabs the most because it was the newest site I heard of in the summit, Bahaa and the team are doing a great job. Tactical Tech new IU is also awesome. So speed geeking is a plus, I will adopt it. Another like is that the sessions time management was on point, so kudos to that and the sessions were relevant to my work. I hope that the networks I made will lead to long term collaborations which will help me in my work as a digital security trainer. All these are likes.

  It was an honour for me to be invited to join Circumvention Tech Festival and the first Trainers Summit in the Mediterranean city of Valencia, Spain on March 1 – 6, 2015. This is a report back on how my week spent there. 1. Valencia was sunny the day the Circumvention Tech Festival (CTFestival) started on the 1st of March. Sunny but pretty chilly for someone who came from a tropical country as myself. But it didn’t hinder me from getting so excited to join more than 400 people from all over the world. CTFestival aimed to bring together activists fighting censorship and surveillance for a week of conferences, workshops, hackathons and social gatherings. Its goal was to provide a space for the community to pool resources, share knowledge, skills and experience, as well as build network. What made it more interesting was that developers were also present, which gave us, the on-the-ground activists who use tools they create, the opportunity to interact with them. The CTFestival was opened with Circumvention Tech Summit (CTS), a one day unconference designed to kick off the festival, where participants got to know each other and the festival, as well as to explore topics of conversation that will take place on the following week. After a lightening speed of introduction for each participants and explanation of the event and its (strict) rules, a skills share session opened with tens of topics to choose from. Topic ranged from countries experience sharing on censorship and surveillance situation, to how to conduct, digital security training, to understanding tools (Enigmail, TOR, TAILS, mobile security tools, etc), to how to get organizational buy-ins and many other topics. The first day was ended with an opening reception.

  La actividad fue realizada por Sursiendo en San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México. Sursiendo es un pequeño colectivo que trabaja e investiga sobre los commons o bienes comunes en un sentido amplio, incluyendo tanto a procesos de defensa de la tierra y el territorio como a movimientos de software libre y cultura libre. Queremos aportar al cambio social a través de una participación equitativa y creativa, que incluya una perspectiva de género, apoyándonos en la educación y la comunicación popular. -- Chiapas es uno de los Estados mexicanos más empobrecidos. La población de mujeres y niños y niñas es quien a su vez sufre mayormente situaciones de exclusión y marginación. Esta realidad también se ve reflejada en el acceso y uso de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación. Según datos oficiales del INEGI -Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Tecnología- solo el 24% de la población total del Estado de Chiapas son usuarios y usuarias de Internet. Y aún cuando no se conocen con exactitud los grupos poblacionales diferenciados, la experiencia hace suponer que la brecha en acceso y uso de las herramientas digitales es mucho menor entre la población femenina que en la masculina. Sin embargo la tecnología no son solo las herramientas digitales que podemos utilizar. Queremos entenderla desde un punto de vista integral y atravesando muchas otras prácticas y concepciones. Así, se hace imprescindible que las mujeres que hacen uso cotidiano de esta herramienta tengan una posición política clara tanto frente a las vulnerabilidades que enfrentan las mujeres chiapanecas, como ante sí mismas y los medios que usan y eligen para comunicarse. En un momento en el que una gran parte de nuestras interacciones están atravesadas por las comunicaciones digitales, tomar conciencia y establecer prácticas más seguras se hace un imperativo. Nuestro empoderamiento cotidiano también debe pasar por lo tecnológico.

  La rebeldía es contagiosa, decía mi mamá cuando mi hermana mayor empezaba a armar relajo y le seguíamos las demás. Pobre mi mamá, mucho le hemos hecho renegar. Esto me vino a la cabeza porque quería explicarles lo esperanzador que es dejarse contagiar la rebedía, así, adrede, no por azar, no por accidente, no por seguir la corriente. Claro está, no es fácil encontrar fuentes de contagio fidedignas, pero después de algún tiempo en el limbo, esperando las oportunidades adecuadas, ¡zas! un día de repente te encuentras en un lugar junto a muchas otras rebeldes y suspiras y dices "aquí es donde yo quiero estar", y esa sensación de hermandad te da luces sobre el hecho de que definitivamente no eres la única imilla hacker. Así, llena de curiosidad y rebeldía me fui al Instituto de Género y Tecnologías IGT realizado en Ecuador en junio de 2016. Un evento organizado por el colectivo Tactical Tech que contó con la participación de otras 58 imillas hackers latinoamericanas y con un grupo de 12 facilitadoras. Nos reunimos para compartir conocimientos y para repensar, desde la tecnología y el género, la justicia social y la autonomía de las mujeres. Intenso.

  Latin America is today the land of hope for the whole world, the strength of its ecosystems, the self-organisation of its people let us think that the problems we have as the human specie could be overcome. Yet we know that the road is not easy. The historical and collective memory not only of its native people, but also most recently of the many dictatorships and wars that have arisen in countries like Honduras, Colombia and Mexico reminds us constantly what it takes to defend freedom in those complicated times. When I started to participate in the digital security workshops I felt great distress, Mexico was revealing itself as a country at war in which the impression was that some lives did not count. For instance, in Ciudad Juarez, a city with 1 million and a half of inhabitants located nearby the US border, 11.114 murders were registered from the 1^st of January 2007 to the 21th of October 2012. The story about the feminicides happening in this city is also something well known worldwide. Then we documented how in different cities the organized crime killed people for spreading messages into social networks, and it got worse when the government criminalized people that tried to face this emergency by providing information to get organised also through social networks.

  Mientras trabajábamos para la presentación del webinario al que titulamos “Que no te callen”, yo recordaba -intentando revivir- los días del IGT Ecuador 2016. Fueron intensos. Fueron días muy añorados también, porque no siempre se tiene la oportunidad de trabajar al lado de amigas tan queridas con quienes se comparte esa rebeldía que te mueve, esa indignación que te estremece, esas mismas ganas de crear, construir y derribar barreras desde la sororidad. Recordaba también que, al final del último día del Encuentro, une de les compañeres se acercó a mí, charlamos un rato, y luego, cuando le pregunté cómo se sintió durante la semana (Haciendo un poquito de ingeniería social ¿Sabés?), me respondió: “yo venía con mucho miedo de no poder aprender, pero ustedes me dieron la confianza para perder el miedo y aprender, es que ustedes son un gran grupo de amig(e)s construyendo juntas.” - Dicho eso, y tan rápido como pude deshacer el nudo de mí garganta, caí en cuenta que ésto recién comenzaba.   Poquito más de 15 días antes de la fecha, recibí una muy cordial invitación para ser parte de la experiencia Internet Freedom Festival 2016. - ¿Cómo negarme? - Pese a que ya tenía comprometidas esas mismas fechas, yo quería estar ahí. Así que, con un enorme dilema moral a cuestas, comencé todas las gestiones -cruzando los deditos- para cancelar y solicitar un cambio de fecha que me permitiera estar en el IFF. Y llegué. En, Las Naves, compartimos alrededor de 200 personas, de 74 nacionalidades diferentes. Yo, que soy una latina/caribeña muy orgullosa de mí mestizaje, adoré ese cálido sentimiento de fraternidad multicultural que nos cobijó durante seis días de intensa actividad. Conocí personas, y personajes, muy interesantes. Amé conocer más compañeras feministas alrededor del mundo que abordan el tema Seguridad Digital, no solamente desde una perspectiva de Derechos Humanos sino también con un necesario enfoque de género. Además, esta experiencia, me dio la dulce oportunidad de reencontrarme con tres amigas muy queridas, compañeras de lucha, ciberfeministas con quienes compartimos actividad desde diferentes rincones del ciberespacio latinoamericano, desde hace ya un par de años. Somos muy pocas. Me llenó de mucha emoción, por ejemplo, conocer y compartir con una compañera desarrolladora de software de Mozilla; porque, además de ser desarrolladora de software de una de mís herramientas favoritas, es latina, pero además de ser latina es mujer, y además de ser mujer es una compañera feminista con la que me identifiqué política e ideológicamente. Pero, además de ser todo lo que es, la compañera destella una vibra acogedora. Adoro conocer seres de luz. Asistí muy emocionada a varias sesiones. Fue una dinámica al mero estílo universitario, donde debías organizar tú horario de sesiones, cambiabas de aula a cada hora, te encontrabas gente linda en los pasillos y te tomabas unos minutitos para saludar a prisa. ¡A mí te interesaban muchas sesiones! Desde las sesiones referentes al contexto Latinoamericano hasta el tema de Libertad de Expresión en África. Ésto me lleva a reflexionar sobre el creciente interés por la defensa de los derechos digitales en Latinoamerica. El tema de la -ciber- vigilancia masiva y la defensa del derecho a la privacidad digital comienzan a insertarse como tema de discusión dentro de organizaciones/colectivos/redes de sociedad civil. Y el debate político debe endurecerse. Dentro de la palestra social/política de la región centroamérica, por ejemplo, no se habla mucho sobre el tema. Pero la gran mayoría de defensoras/es de Derechos Humanos tienen intervenidas sus comunicaciones. Además, es de conocimiento público la contratación de servicios de Hacking Team por parte de algunos gobiernos con falsas democrácias de nuestra América Latina. Entre otras cosas. No podemos ignorar entonces ese gran elefante de color rosa en el medio de la habitación, ¿No?

  Testimony “My first Digital Security Training as co-facilitator”, Berlin, February 2015 - lagartata March 2014 was my first encounter with Digital Security (DS). I was participant on a security training, implemented by Tactical Tech and Front line defenders, organized by Kaos GL in Ankara Turkey. For the first time I realized that encryption is actually something that we can all get and use. We had wonderful facilitators that amazed me with their knowledge and self-education. I got very motivated to learn more about securing my digital data, but also curious to locate and map all my insecure habits. My next stop was the Gender and Technology Institute (GTI). One of the best institutes that I have ever been, where my brain was loaded with so much information that it was getting crazy. I took all those valuable connections, info and knowledge that I made, I embraced my motivation and enthusiasm about the issue and again I started from the beginning. I changed my mental scope and entered more deeply into the world of technologies. I started learning more about the devices that I am using and in the same time I was implementing more tools to secure my communication and data. My plan was to train myself until the point where I will feel competent enough to approach some of the wonderful people that I met on the GTI and offer my services to help spreading the word. Then unexpectedly I got an encrypted mail (:P) proposing me to join a facilitators team and do my first training as a co-facilitator. First I got scared and wasn't sure if I knew enough, as I was still learning and it is a great responsibility talking about security. My brain started working like on the GTI, as an overdosed CPU, so in the same time I was assessing my knowledge and the lack of knowledge that I have, comparing it with the opportunity to share what I know and learn what I don't know from the ones that are more experienced than me. I had the opportunity to share my modest knowledge but also be part of a DST team, so I realized that it is a great challenge that I can't miss. So I accepted the offer. I realized that the panic that was rushing through my veins was actually positive and was making me invest more time and force in my preparation. So I had few weeks full of reading and finding ways for transferring what I have learned into visual and practical materials for the training. Luckily I didn't have to “invent the wheel” again and I was using the resources that other DS trainers have already put online to help people like me. In the same time my creativity was also challenged so it was a very interesting process. Meanwhile we were preparing the training on meet.jitsi and mail, with the two other great co-facilitators from Tactical Tech. The agenda was evolving from week to week. The sources that we used were the opinion and experience of the facilitators and the questionnaires filled by the participants before the training, regarding their knowledge and use of devices and OS. The deal was, every one of us will lead some of the sessions, others will be done together, but most importantly every facilitator will give their support and focus on the participants while the other was presenting. It all sounded great and while I was still struggling with my fear I was challenged even more to be better and to learn more. So enough about my prep time and let me get to the point.   The f3mhack training for mostly women journalists, bloggers and activists that took place in Nairobi was timely because it occurred when many people are becoming increasingly aware of the need to be safe online. By targeting this unique set of participants who have the skills and forums to share the information with the public through articles in the newspapers, broadcast media, blogs and gender activists to learn privacy and security tools, was critical towards furthering the agenda of empowering them with the tools on how they can share more widely on what they learned. The participants also form a critical group that is often susceptible to cyber attacks due to the nature of their work and there was need for discussion on practical tips that an individual or group could take towards finding tips on how to advocate for private online spaces to be protected. The training was set up to help the participant understand threats from a personal point of view so that one can develop practical steps on privacy advocacy and security that can impact a larger group from a point of understanding. For the training of university students in Njoro, the training was important to reach out to this group as they are often referred to as the techno savvy generation. They are well versed with the latest sites where they can access free software that would most likely expose them to more dangers. As was evident in the discussions held, the large number of students at the university means that when a cyber crime occurs, the level of sharing that information is very high and the level of stigma also high because the students can easily identify and meet the person who has been offended online due to their close proximity at campus and their daily interactions. This group was also a critical one to target for the training because it would be considered as an early intervention for the students to start applying the knowledge learned that would be useful to them on campus and when they join the job market. Some of the students were in their last semester so it would be great to follow up with them after a year to see the impact the training had on their work lives. The other main critical reason why targeting the university was critical is because through organizing the training through the gender department, their was the hope that we would be strengthening the existing structures of privacy safety online but more so to introduce them to the need to set up modules on privacy advocacy and security that would be streamlined in the curriculum or if not existing forums to discuss on various issues.

  Vivo en una ciudad en la que el estado ha iniciado campañas de criminalización contra todxs aquellos que visiblemente se oponen a su actuar, y por visible me refiero a las personas/movimientos que pueden llegar a convocar a otras organizaciones o que tienen impacto mediático. A poco más de un año del inicio de una cacería sobre luchadores sociales y defensores de derechos humanos, un pequeño colectivo de jóvenes, hombres y mujeres, esta siendo incriminada para parecer como parte de un grupo terrorista, su mayor delito es en el fondo decir lo que piensan en las redes sociales.
