  My motivation to be a digital security and privacy advocacy trainer started two years ago when as a member of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT),both locally and internationally , went through a Trainers of Trainers training that was facilitated by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) on how to stay safe online for women. Upon conclusion of the training I conducted trainings for media, civil society, government officials using the tools especially security in a box,among others. Thereafter,, I was a panelist during a roundtable discussion in Morocco during an IAWRT biennial conference, where I had the opportunity to share on digital security citing case studies in Kenya. Mid last year I was selected by the IAWRT-Kenya chapter to be the lead facilitator for round tables on how various counties in Kenya could spearhead initiatives on how digital security for women could be enhanced using mechanisms that were available to them. The stakeholders at the roundtable forums were drawn from the police-gender desk, county government officials mostly from the departments that deal with women, universities-especially those with gender departments, women civil society organizations and media. Each county I went to came up with its own unique action plan on how it could tackle security for women online. When I attended the Gender Technical Institute last year in Germany, I went with one mission - to identify new areas of privacy advocacy and digital security that I could adapt as I continue my work in training and facilitating roundtable discussions in the future, as I seek to reach out to different target groups of participants. Here the idea of flash trainings and being innovative with how we advocate for security skills was sharpened. I also learned new digital security tools that I could share that are in line with the changing times. These were the tools that I weaved into my trainings during the f3mhack conducted in Kenya I have met so many women who have gone through cyber bullying and seen the impacts that it has had on their lives. For me training on privacy advocacy and digital security is more than just training it is about sharing critical information that will change the lives of women in online spaces.

  Personalmente, me entristece y preocupa mucho que nos estemos acostumbrando a vivir con miedo y resignación. Falta mucho por hacer. Por ello, mí interés por el IFF. Por compartir espacios y experiencias con personas que hacen lo mismo que yo bajo otros contextos. Y, considerando que cada experiencia es diferente, me resulta sumamente valioso nutrirme de ellas porque, además, encuentro en cada historia una fuerza motivadora que me alienta para seguir adelante. Me resulta imperioso que sumemos esfuerzos colectivos para fortalecer nuestras redes de trabajo, nuestros espacios de acción, pero también para estar “ahí” para nosotras mísmas; para apoyarnos, para escucharnos, para cuidarnos. Por otro lado, también hubieron algunas cositas que considero pueden mejorar para cuando nos reencontremos el próximo año. Y, en esta vía, me enfocaré solamente en dos grandes puntos que me resultan importante para resaltar: el primero es que me decepcionó un poco -mucho- asistir a sesiones con títulos espectacularmente prometedores, pero que tanto su contenido como la metodología se quedaron demasiado cortos. El segundo punto, más allá de las debilidades metodológicas y contenidos pobres de algunas sesiones, me preocupa sobre manera haberme encontrado con personas -dolorosamente latinoamericanas- que aceptasen abiertamente su falta de visión y compromiso con la promoción y defensa de Derechos Humanos. Sin una pizca de culpa, eh. Es que no entendí qué estaban haciendo allí entonces. Por suerte, no llegué a sentirme vulnerada porque eramos más las personas que “estamos de éste lado”. Y bueno, ya que estamos, podemos también hablar sobre el tema del idioma. Es complicado, lo sé. Porque presuponemos que todas las personas estamos obligadas a saber hablar inglés. Yo estuve presente en más de una sesión donde la lengua nativa de la mayoría de las personas presentes es el castellano, pero la sesiones se dirigieron en inglés porque una o dos personas no entendían español, habiendo todo un equipo voluntario para las traducciones en vivo. Lo anterior me recuerda la necesidad de generar materiales en lenguas nativas, para garantizar una mejor compresión. Y, en esta línea, tuve la oportunidad de sumarme a la iniciativa Localization Summit, cuyo objetivo es construir una red voluntaria que identifique proyectos e iniciativas en materia de Seguridad Digital desarrollados y publicados en inglés para traducirlos a otras lenguas, entre ellas el español.

  Te estarás preguntando quizás cual es la gran importancia de eventos como este. Pues, es evidente que en América Latina nos urge dar mayor cabida al tema de la violencia de género, en este caso, relacionada con las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación. Problemas como el acoso en línea, la vigilancia, las amenazas, el hostigamiento -por nombrar solo algunos-, ya sea por parte de gobiernos o individuos, están afectando significativamente el trabajo, la seguridad, y el bienestar físico y mental de mujeres activistas y personas LGTBQI que usan internet como una herramienta fundamental en sus luchas. Debido a este ambiente de violencia, que además no se limita al mundo virtual, las voces de mujeres y personas LGTBQI son paulatinamente silenciadas.

  Temas El ámbito de derechos humanos y la tecnología es amplio y diverso. Por eso, circunscribir los temas que se pueden tratar en un encuentro puede ser una tarea ardua. Dentro de la coyuntura creo que estuvieron adecuados. Los que me resultaron más útiles fueron: Vigilancia masiva y privacidad: en las protestas de 2015 tanto la DIGICI como la DIGICRI y otras agencias del Estado pusieron todos sus recursos y esfuerzos en vigilar a la población que protestaba. Con un nuevo gobierno de corte militar, estas iniciativas siguen en pie. Lo mismo ocurre en Argentina, con el aliciente de que el gobierno de Macri está estableciendo convenios con empresas como Facebook o Microsoft. Coordinación de esfuerzos de formadores en seguridad digital. Si bien en América Latina estamos articuladas alrededor de la lista CiberfeministasLatam, es útil vernos y hacer un repaso de qué está haciendo cada una. Siento que ser parte de la red latinoamericana da una contención importante. Violencia de género en línea. Este es un tema urgente y que estamos trabajando en Guate. Con el observatorio contra el acoso callejero de Guatemala estamos pensando en una plataforma para la denuncia, sistematización y mapeo del acoso. Y en el #InternetFF conocí varias iniciativas que pueden servir de insumo para su diseño. Diseño: de software (o proyectos que den solución a problemas específicos), diseño de interfaces y contenidos que la gente entienda. Este tema me interesó particularmente porque como formadoras e impulsoras de una práctica feminista tenemos que estar constantemente produciendo contenidos, campañas y otros materiales que necesitamos que transmitan las ideas claras. Fue interesante ver el ejercicio de cómo, en una sesión, las participantes le dieron feedback constructivo a una aplicación. Metodologías Entiendo que, luego de la retroalimentación del festival anterior, este año la propuesta de los tracks se hizo más flexible de modo que cada participante pudiera hacer su propio camino durante los días del encuentro. Aunque en algún punto resultaba agobiante elegir a qué sesión. De las propuestas metodológicas, las más útiles me parecieron: Mezclar en un espacio a desarrolladoras, diseñadoras, formadoras y usuarias, porque permite entender las necesidades de cada rol, y generar recursos y sinergias para que todo el sistema funcione en cada una de las etapas. Intercambiar experiencias personales y las estrategias que usaron para resolver tal o cual conflicto, porque nos hace reflexionar sobre cómo adaptarlas localmente. Conocer iniciativas que se llevan adelante en otros lugares porque podemos replicar ideas de acuerdo a nuestros recursos. A veces no hacemos cosas porque no podemos, pero otras porque no se nos ocurren. Los espacios de intercambio regional, porque sirve para desvirtualizar a las personas con las que interactuamos a lo largo del año, y generar lazos de confianza. Tal vez hubiera sido positivo que los track leaders estuvieran mejor identificados para poder hacerles consultas sobre su track en particular. Mi sensación fue que su participación se diluyó con la de los demás a lo largo del festival. No sé cómo estaba prevista. Logística/organización En términos generales me pareció que la organización estuvo perfecta. Siempre es complicado tener atados todos los cabos en actividades como estas pero no hubo mayores inconvenientes. Cosas que me gustaron y creo que funcionaron: Las sesiones autopropuestas. Es un formato flexible que va tomando vida según los intereses de las y los participantes. Que haya flexibilidad para proponer sesiones a medida que se van identificando necesidades a lo largo de los días. El espacio físico de Las Naves es precioso, inspirador en algún punto. Me gustó que no era un lugar exclusivo para el encuentro sino que te mezclabas con gente que estaba trabajando. Se podía espiar sus proyectos, espacios de trabajo, productos, etc. La wiki como espacio de sistematización es súper práctico, fácil de actualizar y ordenado. Lo mismo con las actualizaciones mediante la lista de correo. Cosas que se podrían mejorar: No todos los espacios eran accesibles para personas con movilidad reducida. Hubo dos sesiones a las que fuimos que se habían cancelado y no había sido actualizado en la agenda. Una hora era por un lado, corto. Por el otro, entiendo que más tiempo prestando atención es complicado. Pero como muchas de las sesiones eran participativas, se hacía llevadero. Tal vez dejar 10 minutos entre sesión y sesión. Entre corridas a veces había que sacrificar una sesión para poder llegar tranquila.   The same atmosphere informed the following day, when we simulated a risk assessment, with members of another small group impersonating the trainers who asked questions, while the people who had stayed in the original group enacted the organization who had asked for help. Everyone contributed to the discussion in a positive and precious manner, which struck me particularly since I was the only woman in the group and I felt free to talk and listened at. During the afternoon, when it was time to draft a possible agenda for our model group, it was very interesting and encouraging to see how the method of consensual decision-making was ingrained in everyone’s mindset, leading to an enrichment of each individual’s original ideas. At the end of the day affinities within my smaller group and in the group of the Summit as a whole had clearly emerged, and I had a feeling of complicity with many participants, which I think could be the beginning of veryfruitful co-operations. As regards the acquisition of skills, I feel that the last day of the Summit was the most useful. During the morning we split into small groups according to the needs we still had, and by joining a group on threat modelling in organizations and one on the basics of risk assessment, I felt not only that I had grasped some notions I lacked, but also that my doubts on the possibility of spreading a more responsible attitude towards privacy tools could be dispelled by a change in my approach to digital security trainings based on a more holistic vision of the whole process. As dispelling such doubts was one of my strongest needs, I feel that taking part in the Trainers Summit has been fundamental not only for my knowledge of tools and practices, but also for my willingness to keep offering trainings as an activist (and possibly as a professional) and to experiment with the approaches that were shared among the participant trainers.

  The workshop gave an introduction to technopolitical aspects of surveillance, digital security and digital tools. The possibility of using TAILS was discussed and I brought some USB installed with me but we did not have enough time to work on that topic. The workshop consisted in mail encryption using Thunderbird and Enigmail. It took place on Saturday, which is the most appropriate day for the community and lasted from 10AM to 6 PM with an hour break for lunch. The introductory part adopted an approach through concrete examples dealing with information management and this perspective pleased very much the participants. Individuals were already convinced that they needed encryption but the introductory part helped them to understand they also needed to visualise integral strategies. Although the organization was already working with a secure server, they had not yet configured their email accounts so we had to first proceed with this configuration. Accordingly, downloading the programs and installing it made the process quite slow. Nonetheless most of the attendees could leave the workshop with an encrypted mail but they do not use it still on a daily basis. Comments: The time for the workshop was not enough, at the same time it is difficult for the participants to dispose of more time between their work and activism and getting more in-depth in technical issues requires time. There is also a strong gender gap in what relates to possibilities to access to technology. There are also technical difficulties because the access to the Internet and computers is highly variable and is not granted everywhere and all the time. My feeling was that it would have been more useful to only set up one mail account during the workshop as an example of the steps they should follow once they would go back home, and to give them also printed step by step tutorials. Obviously, those changes requires time, engage in a long term process held by more visits to to these communities. One of the sisters who took the workshop could read English well so I left one Security in a box and she wrote to me telling me that she had already read it and it served her well. We agreed to have a second workshop in the near future.
