La gente confía en la tecnología digital para difundir sus actividades, recolectar datos, enviar comunicaciones y organizar movilizaciones. A pesar de ello, pocos conocen los riesgos asociados con su uso.

Computadoras y copias de respaldo que fueron confiscadas, contraseñas que cambiaron misteriosamente, sitios web locales que fueron víctimas de “piratas” informáticos o sobrecargados por tráfico de Internet malicioso, páginas web extranjeras que ya no pueden ser visitadas y correos electrónicos que parecen haber sido falsificados, bloqueados, modificados o leídos por alguien distinto al destinatario deseado. Todas estas son historias verdaderas y muchas de ellas ocurren en un medio que incluso empeora las cosas, es decir, un medio en el que el sistema operativo de las computadoras está frecuentemente desactualizado, los programas son usualmente ilegales y los virus se desplazan de manera incontrolada.
